Maybe a Cow Would Be Cheaper

For weeks I've been resisting the need to buy ANOTHER gallon of milk when I go grocery shopping. This brings our grand total to FOUR gallons of milk for a family of three per week. Isn't that a little excessive? It seems like you should never be buying more gallons of milk than there are people in your house.

I can't say I wasn't warned by Birch's parents when we got married. I've often heard the story of how much milk they had in their fridge for weeks when he left for college before they realized who the milk guzzler in the family was.

In my own family, I remember grocery shopping with my mom and loading eight gallons of milk into the cart for our family of nine. We were VERY happy when Sam's Club came to town! Once my mom even assigned a separate gallon for every person in the family to show us who was drinking more than their fair share. A name was written with marker on every gallon and by the end of the week, my teenage brother was buying milk off the younger kids. My middle sister had the idea to add chocolate syrup to her gallon but wasn't sure that was such a great plan after a few days of chocolate milk on her cereal.

I guess it could be worse. My boys could be asking for 4 bags of chips per week, 4 containers of ice cream or 4 frozen pizzas. And the price of milk has gone down from a few months ago so it's not quite as expensive. But it's probably not as necessary to be buying orange juice fortified with calcium.

Does your family eat a ridiculous amount of any food?

Wow!! That is crazy! We dont even go through a full 2 gallons in a week. Of course I dont like milk (I was brought up on powdered milk and that ruined it for me).

Bread. We are always running out of bread even though I buy tons and freeze it! I wish my kids would drink more milk - it is better for them than bread and catsup (another thing we got through tons of).

Transformer fruit snacks. For my 5 years old hubbie. :)

We go through a ton but is seems to match the cold cereal consumption of like 6 boxes a week. I found that you can buy Soy milk at Costco for cheaper than regular Milk and mix it half and half on your cereal and not taste the difference...

We go through four gallons too. I blame my husband and Lizzy they both drink more than their fair share. Thank goodness for WIC. Well Justin eats more of his fair share of everything these days. But I guess he is a growing boy or fireman. I like the idea of soy milk.

When I was growing up, my mom solved the milk problem by switching to powdered 100%. Then nobody ever wanted to drink milk. However, I've heard of full cream milk powdered milk on this food blog.

Well, we've got you beat. I have to buy 5 gallons every week. Plus, I have to buy 3 different kinds! (whole for the baby, and 2% for the husband who won't drink fat free with the rest of us.) If you really want to save money, I've heard of people making and mixing in powdered milk from the cannery with their fresh milk from the store without it affecting the taste much.

That is so funny. We buy three gallons a week so I almost understand. I don't think there is anything we eat too much except for maybe junk food in general. Oh wait! Maybe peanut butter since Jack is eating it for at least two meals a day. Yeesh.

We also had 9 people in my family and went through 20 gallons of milk a week. My husband and I just go through 3 or 4 a week. To cut the cost down I mix it with powdered milk. If you do it half and half you can't taste the difference and it cuts down on the cost.

Thats hilarious! We deal with the same problem! I feel like I am constantly buying milk. We drink Milk here like water! I am partially to blame! Oh well right?! Milk does the Body GOOD!

Boyd eats about two loaves of bread by himself in a week. I make 5 loaves at a time and it only lasts us two weeks! I don't know what we're going to do when we have kids. Yikes!

Now, that's my hubby you're talking about that was buying milk off of his siblings by the end of the week, right?? Nothing has changed!! Allen loves milk. We usually have 3-6 gallons of milk in our fridge at all times. It's pretty crazy. Just a few months ago, he decided to make a whole gallon chocolate {without my knowledge} and I was so upset about it that he was forced to use it for everything, too! Yuck. My stomach can't handle more than a 1/2 cup of choc milk. Anyway, I eventually caved and let him use regular milk along with his chocolate gallon.

It's funny bc I give Allen a hard time about the foods he's particular about... has to be Prego spaghetti sauce, Chips Ahoy cookies must be present in the house at all times {blue bag only}, Motts is the only acceptable applesauce... haha! I'm sure I have my food habits, too. :)

Fun post, Camille! Can't wait to meet this baby girl! Ahh!

It's the McEuen genes at work Camille. Our family went through 14 gallons a week! My Mom joked that Melissa couldn't walk by the fridge without the milk calling to her - "Drink me!" I buy 14 gallons from Costco but it lasts for 2.5 - 3 weeks. I LOVE my 2nd fridge.
