Warning: this is a potty-training post. I'll understand if you want to skip this one. :)
I've been doubtful that Trevor was ready to be potty-trained. The baby has only been here for 6 weeks and the kid just turned two in April! But since Birch was going to be around this week we decided to give it a shot and.....so far, so good!
I'm worried that I'll jinx something by writing this but he's caught on pretty quickly. We used the tricks many of you passed on: towels all over the house, setting the timer to go off every 15 minutes, and a counter full of treats. Sometimes Trevor will explain to us what's happening: "You sit on the potty and the water comes out of the hole right there." So instead of asking him if he needs to go potty we usually ask if he needs to make water. Maybe someday we'll switch to a normal phrase.
The only snag was today when we realized he hadn't pooped since Sunday. The poor kid was dancing around asking for a diaper, afraid to go in the toilet. We walked all around the house and outside trying to find a place he was comfortable: the big potty, the little potty, the rocks outside, the grass. I called both of our moms, hoping for a magic trick to help him but they said it's just a boy thing. You have to wait until it's bad enough that they just go. Finally we got to that point. We gave the kid a little privacy and he finished the job!
So tomorrow is day 3 of potty training. I'm done giving Trevor unlimited juice and chocolate milk but we'll keep reward candy around for a little longer. Hopefully we'll get luckyand not have him lose interest.
One question: some of you have told me about plastic pants to put on over the underwear but I can't find them. Well, at least I couldn't find them at Target. And if it isn't there, then it doesn't exist, right?

I'm glad to hear that it's going well. Trevor is such a champion:) Plus it doesn't hurt to have such amazing parents to help him out.
Hope your good luck and progress continues!!
I bought the plastic pants at target they are near the cloth diapers.
Lizzy had a hard time going poop the first week but once she got it out a couple times she was okay. I think the change is just an adjustment and makes them hold it in. Congrats!
This is all such great information for future use. That's funny that Trevor generalized the "making water" over to the poop too. What a smartie pants, and a good listener. :) Good luck with the rest of potty time.
Head over to my blog...I finally let my news out! So exciting.
They also have the plastic pants at Walmart. Good luck with the potty training... I always found it was two steps forward... three steps back. Hopefully not in your case, but just know you are not alone if that happens.
I'm glad to hear things are going well. I may be asking you for tips in a couple months.
There might have been some in the bags of clothes we gave you, I know we had some and now we don't. If you can't find them ask Kai. I think we got them at Babies r Us.
I am glad to hear that it is going so well!
That's awesome that he is doing so well! I hope for your sake that it lasts. Someone already said this, but Walmart has plastic pants. They are in a weird place though--like with the socks or burp cloths or something. I found them by accident and thought, wow, that's a weird place for those. So it's probably the same deal with Target. Just look up and down all the baby isles.
so glad potty time is going good. I will have to read your tips to get ready to train P. Ben is home the last week in July so i think we will try it then. Maybe not as scarey as it sounds? Your new little baby is a doll. Glad she is here safe and sound. Happy late B day too! Oh im so with you thinking i could handle two and that it wouldn't be too hard. Well it was but it keeps getting easier and more natural! Hope the same goes for you!
Aw man! Poor guy! Holding number two is the worst!!! Glad he finally took care of it. ;)
I am dying laughing! Poor guy!!
