One-Year-Old Discipline

Like many moms out there, I find myself repeating the same phrases over and OVER again. At our house what is heard most often is, "Trevor, we throw balls!" He has a pretty good arm and loves to launch anything he can get his hands on. Birch and I both have a few bumps that have come from flying cars and play animals (usually at the face).

Rather than tell him no every time he throws, we've decided that it's okay to throw balls but everything else needs to stay on the ground. When Trevor does launch a toy, we give him a warning and after that he goes to his "time-out mat." The problem is that he doesn't show any remorse when he's in time-out. He's learning the word sit so he stays on his mat saying "Sit, sit, sit" while he smiles.

I don't think the message is getting through, any ideas???

I have a friend who puts toys in time out. If my boys threw toys I took them away. "Oh! Cars aren't for throwing! Bye bye car!". Either that or redirect him to another game.

I have been meaning to tell you that it is a good idea to start having Trevor's hearing tested every 6 months. I don't know whose side the hearing problems come from but both my kids needed tubes. I started testing Peter when we learned about Collin and that is how we caught it so early and he has had a much better outcome.

just be consistent... He is still young and learning. Timeouts for Alexis still seem like a joke now and then... but she is learning. We also count to three and she responds to that pretty well. Sounds like he is being a normal kid and testing limits... Good luck!

We're trying to work on a little time out system of our own here. Nash has recently picked up some nasty little habits like hitting mom in the face and today was a new one, pinching! Where in the world he learns these things I don't know! Anyways, we'll have to discuss punishment ideas cause Nash shows no understanding let alone any remorse.
