Holiday Traditions: Thanksgiving

Some friends and I met this week to share our family holiday traditions. It was fun to swap ideas and hear what other families do to celebrate. I love what my family did for each holiday when I was growing up but I also want to start traditions that will be unique to my own little family.

So now I'm opening it up to all of you! Rather than talk about all of the holidays at once, I thought I'd post about Thanksgiving first and talk about the rest as they come along.

Here's what our group came up with:

  • Run in a Turkey Trot (5k/10k) or play in a Turkey Bowl to burn a few calories before the big feast
  • Give kids holiday pajamas on Thanksgiving to wear through the month of December
  • Bake rolls with messages/questions inside (wrapped in foil) to get the "thankful" conversation started
  • Go around the table and give everyone a chance to say what they are thankful for
  • Play family games after the meal (i.e. BINGO, white elephant)
  • Decorate the Christmas tree on Thanksgiving weekend

So what does YOUR family do to celebrate Thanksgiving?

Thanks for sharing your ideas! I love the idea of giving the PJ's earlier and hiding notes in the rolls. Such great ideas! Most of our traditions you have on your list already. We usually let the kids decorate little name tags for the place settings or something to put on the table. I posted some little turkeys on my blog you could use. Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving!

Too bad we missed the ward halloween party. I hope we get along well with people in our new ward and make friends fast, cuz I miss everyone from campbell ward. I really need to get used to change. Anyway...I don't have any special Thanksgiving ideas, but the ones on this blog are great idea starters. What a great idea for a blog entry. Thanks for this posting. Your blog is fun to read!

Thanks, Camille! I've really been trying to think of more things we could do for the Holidays this year.

This may be a little early for some people, but we always brought out our Christmas decorations on Thanksgiving.
Camille, if I could, I'd like to take a look at the Christmas story collection you mentioned on my blog- could I make copies? Thanks for the other ideas also.
