We took a rare trip to the grocery store with Birch this week. I like it when he comes with me because then I can see what food he really likes. Usually I expect to see bags of Doritos, frozen hot wings, and Powerade in the cart but this time he tossed in a loaf of marble rye bread.
While we finished shopping the story of the marble rye came out: during high school he worked at a ranch doing odd jobs (i.e. yardwork, cleaning horse stalls) and most days for lunch the woman who lived there would make him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on rye. After a while the flavor grew on him but he hasn't had one in years. So this week Birch has been enjoying a delicious PB & J on rye for lunch almost every day. I did try it once but it didn't have the same effect on me.
Do you have any strange (or normal) foods from your childhood that you love? My mom always made taco meat with El Pato and tomato sauce and it's still my favorite. For breakfast we ate rice cereal: a bowl of rice with sugar, cinnamon and milk. Sometimes when we go home for a visit my dad will make it and Birch just shakes his head. Maybe on those days I'll agree to eat a PB & J on rye for him.

I'm trying to think of something peculiar...as a snack, my dad would always make graham cracker sandwiches with peanut butter and dunk them in milk. Growing up, I didn't like meat sandwiches. PB&J was tolerable, but mostly my mom just stuck a couple of tortillas in my lunch. :)
haha this is a great post. Chad thinks half the stuff I grew up on was crazy..... My family LOVES lemons with salt as I've mentioned before. I use to eat tuna fish with vinegar and salt and pepper on saltine crackers (I didn't think that was odd until I told Chad about it the other day and he looked at me in disgust.) and our all time fav.... hot dogs cut open with mashed potatoes and cheese on them. I believe I requested these for one of my birthday dinners when I was younger.
I grew up on breakfasts of hot chocolate and toast (dip the buttered toast into the hot chocolate) and a dinner of creamed tuna on toast, both of which I have learned are fairly odd. I think when we were young we used to eat apples with salt too.
When I was growing up-we had chili cheese omlets. I didn't think that was weird until I got married and fed it to my in-laws and they thought it was weird, but now Clifton is hooked. :) His family makes "macaroni and tomato sauce" which is exactly what it is with cheese on top...after four years I still think it is disgusting.
I grew up with "finger dip" which is cut up cucumbers and onions marinated in a bath of apple-cider vinegar with a little sugar. I think it's absolutely DEE-licious, but I'm pretty sure that everyone thinks is crazy disgusting! I think Jason is half converted...
Another thing I grew up on was what we called, "onion sandwiches." Toasted wheat bread, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, mayo and a slice of onions that have been dipped in vinegar with a little salt. Jason's totally hooked on these and I love them as well!
I LOVE El Pato tacos. That's how my Mom always made them too. I'm the only one around here who likes them. We had the hot dog mashed potatoes & cheese also. We used to eat Cream of Wheat for breakfast sometimes. I haven't found anyone else who likes it. I'm sorry to hear about all of your recent struggles. I wish I lived closer so Trevor could come over to play. It is SO hard when moms have to be away. We will be praying for you!
